Fall City murders: 11-year-old girl pretended to be dead in her Washington state home while 5 family members were shot to death

In Washington state, an 11-year-old boy ran away from his home in the early morning hours to escape a shooting that left him bloodied and wounded and killed his entire family.

Authorities have been investigating the horrific and fatal shooting of five people in Fall City, Washington, for days this week. Now, the girl’s testimony, detailed in court documents, offers a first look at the events that unfolded.

The 11-year-old boy recalled waking up to gunshots on Monday. When she looked outside her bedroom door, she saw blood on her father, Mark Humiston’s head, and blood on her 9-year-old brother’s mouth, according to court documents; Both were lying on the corridor floor.

When his 7-year-old sister emerged from their shared bedroom, the 11-year-old said he heard another gunshot before seeing his younger sister fall to the ground, documents say.

She told investigators the gunman then came into her bedroom and fired his gun once or twice, striking her in the hand and neck.

Despite the pain he felt from the bullet, the 11-year-old boy told authorities he recognized the gun. It was his father’s silver Glock pistol, according to court documents.

He also recognized the shooter. He said it was his 15-year-old brother.

The 11-year-old girl recalled seeing her brother approach the bodies of other family members to see if they were alive and pretend to be dead himself while standing next to her bed.

Their mother, Sarah Huminston, and their 13-year-old brother were shot and killed elsewhere in the house, authorities said.

Two 911 calls related to the same shooting

The girl told investigators that she escaped through the “fire window” in her room after her brother left the room and heard him talking on the phone. The woman ran to a neighbor’s house, where she called 911 just after 5 a.m. to report the shooting and that the shooter was a 15-year-old boy, court documents say.

But this wasn’t the first 911 call about the shooting that morning.

Seven minutes earlier, the 15-year-old boy had called for help, making a panting noise and stating that he was hiding in the bathroom, according to court documents. He told the 911 operator that his 13-year-old brother had killed their parents and committed suicide, according to court documents.

According to court documents, the 13-year-old boy had been caught watching pornography the night before and was about to get into big trouble. According to court documents, the 15-year-old boy told the 911 operator there was a possible motive for the attack.

When the authorities came to the house, the 15-year-old teenager was taken into custody. He was charged in juvenile court Thursday with five counts of aggravated murder and one count of attempted murder armed with a firearm, according to court documents. CNN is not naming the 15-year-old because he is a child.

Under Washington state law, a hearing and a judge’s approval are required before the case can be transferred to adult court. At a hearing Friday, prosecutors formally requested that the teen’s case be moved to adult court; this process often takes months before a final decision is made.

If he is found guilty and his case remains in juvenile court, he could be held until age 25 without further sanctions, according to the King County District Attorney’s Office. If found guilty and charged in an adult court, the youth could be sentenced to 25 years to life with a statutory presumption after 25 years.

“I would like to remind everyone that these are not proven facts, they are merely allegations, and the law presumes our client is innocent of these charges,” Amy Parker, an attorney representing the teenager, told CNN. he said. “We want the court to know that our client is a 15-year-old boy who enjoys mountain biking and fishing and has no criminal history.”

Investigators believe the 15-year-old “systematically murdered” his parents, two brothers and one of his sisters; He attempted to kill his 11-year-old sister and “staged” the scene before first responders arrived, according to court documents.

The 11-year-old girl told the 911 operator that her oldest brother had recently “got into a lot of trouble” because he had failed some tests at school, and later told investigators that she was the only sibling who knew the combination to the lockbox where her father was found. He hid his firearm, according to court documents.

Following the shooting, the 11-year-old boy was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle but was later released, a hospital spokesperson told CNN.

A community mourning after a mass murder

King County Council member Sarah Perry told CNN that a local family member stepped forward to care for the 11-year-old boy and his older sibling, who remains in custody.

“I ask you at this time to join me in keeping all family members, Lake Alice and Fall City community members, and others affected by this terrible situation in your hearts with prayers for peace and healing,” Perry said. he said. expression.

There have been at least 427 mass shootings in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which, like CNN, defines a mass shooting as wounding or killing four or more people, not including the shooter.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gun violence is the leading cause of death among minors in the United States. More than 1,100 children and teenagers have died in mass shootings this year alone, according to the archive.

Earlier this week, the court ordered the 15-year-old to have no contact with his surviving sister, according to Casey McNerthney of the King County Prosecutor’s Office.

Neighbors told KING that Mark and Sarah Humiston homeschooled their children and were very active in the community.

CNN reached out to Hargis Engineers, where Mark works.

“We are blindsided and saddened by the tragic events that have led to the loss of a respected colleague, mentor and friend, as well as close family members,” the company said in a statement to KING about his death. he said. “Mark’s leadership and vision were an integral part of our firm, and we will miss him greatly. Our thoughts are with his surviving family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
