As the founder of Untapped New York, I’ve been to countless incredible, stranger-than-fiction, forbidden places over the past fifteen years. But there is one event for which I will drop everything and make sure my calendar is clear: any event hosted by ND Austin. You may remember this talkative in water towerWild party in an abandoned trolley tunnel under the Manhattan Bridge three person conversationONE extremely socially distanced deskor a piano performance on a barge floating on Newtown Creek… Each event captures the undying curiosity and creativity at the core of New York City residents and brings back the sense of wonder and wonder you felt when you first arrived in New York City. Or for native New Yorkers, the realization that there is much more than what the eye can see.

ND Austin in 2023 Tideland Institute “Drain Bramage,” which transforms a sewer tunnel into an amphitheater with floating barge performances against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline, premiered. (If you’re not like those of us who hear “sewer tunnel” and immediately think “I’m there,” don’t worry; participants will be seated on rocky ledges. outside So you’ll stay perfectly hygienic!). This year’s iteration of Drain Bramage took place last weekend. We attended last year and promised it would be a truly unique New York experience.

The adventure begins even before you reach the extraordinary place. There is insufficient information about it. event page Except for a note to be prepared for “gentle climbing, slippery rocks, and experimental music.” We don’t want to give away too much of the magical experience, but here’s the gist: Guests are sent a text message with meeting instructions the day before the show. Getting to the concert venue is almost like a scavenger hunt. You’ll be doing some really light running, maybe holding on to a rope at one point, but it’s easy and friendly people will be there to help.

Walking among the greenery on the way to the concert

At the concert venue, performers emerged from the sewer tunnel as the music echoed off the walls with an unearthly sound. Throughout the evening, a parade of musicians rode through the tunnel on barges, dazzling audiences with horns, piano and vocals.

This year’s annual event featured composer Stefan Zeniuk, ND Austin and more. Drain Bramage events highlight New York’s waterways and show how water can be integrated into daily life.

Watch out for next year’s performance! Guests are taken to the concert area immediately after the doors open. If you plan to attend, make sure you arrive on time. As the website states, “the tide waits for no one.”
