The Prime Minister said the Conservatives “knew public services were being disrupted”.

“They knew there was a black hole in the public finances,” he adds.

“Spending reserves on Rwanda three times, asylum hotels and supporting failing train companies.

“And that’s before we even get to the challenges that have been ignored for 14 years, an economy rife with productivity and investment weakness.”

But Sir Keir says he “will not use that as an excuse”.

“I’m waiting for my ability to handle this to be evaluated,” he says.

He goes on to say that Labor will “deliver the change that working people need”.

“We won’t just get over this; better days are ahead,” he adds.

“A new future is being built, a better future.”
