South Korean Christian groups protest rights for same-sex couples

Hundreds of thousands of members of Christian groups in South Korea held a ceremony in Seoul on Sunday to protest a court decision recognizing the rights of same-sex couples to receive government health insurance for their partners.

In July, the high court upheld a high court ruling that a same-sex partner could receive spousal benefits from the National Health Insurance Service; This has been lauded as a win for LGBTQ rights in a country that lags behind other countries in the region.

Sunday’s massive ceremony drew hundreds of thousands of Christians from across the country, disrupting traffic on many major roads in central Seoul.

According to police, some 230,000 people attended the event. Meanwhile, organizers said as many as 1.1 million people attended. Calls to the Seoul metropolitan police department were not answered.

Organizing committee spokesman Kim Jeong-hee said the decision was unconstitutional because it did not legalize same-sex marriage.

“I think this will only be the starting point of the policy of legalizing gay marriage,” Kim said. “We see this not just as a Christian issue, but as a major crisis that is shaking the foundations of our country.”
