Peace in West Bengal can only be achieved by stopping cross-border infiltration from Bangladesh, Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday. Speaking at a public event at the Petrapole land port on the India-Bangladesh border, Shah underlined that the Bharatiya Janata Party is committed to ending illegal immigration if it comes to power in the state after the 2026 Assembly elections.

“Infiltration must stop to bring peace to Bengal,” Shah said, urging residents to lead political change in 2026. Criticizing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, he attributed corruption problems and uncontrolled migration to lack of governance in the state.

Talking about the importance of dry ports, Shah said: “Dark ports are critical for improving connectivity and commercial relations between nations. However, when legal routes of movement are restricted, illegal migration comes into play and this hinders peace.” He claimed that the BJP leadership would ensure that infiltration is stopped and law and order is restored.

The Home Minister inaugurated a new passenger terminal building and cargo gate at Petrapole port, highlighting the port’s role in strengthening trade relations between India and Bangladesh. The Petrapole-Benapole route is a vital trade corridor that significantly facilitates trade between the two countries.

Shah’s remarks came amid the BJP’s ongoing efforts to consolidate its support in West Bengal for the 2026 elections, positioning cross-border infiltration and national security as key election issues.
