Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan are among the most admired couples in the Indian entertainment world. Their wedding on 20 April 2007 was a major event in Bollywood and received much attention from fans and media alike.

However, the story behind their ‘roka’ (pre-engagement ceremony) is not well known. In one of the retrospective interviews, Aishwarya revealed how she got rocked after Abhishek Bachchan proposed to her. Aishwarya shared that the roka ceremony happened suddenly and without her father present. Since she was out of town, the Bachchan family came to her house for the ceremony.

He said, “I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a ‘Roka’ ceremony. “We’re South Indian, so I don’t know what arugula is, and suddenly there’s a call from their house to ours: ‘We’re coming.'”

He added: “Abhishek said: ‘We’re all coming and I can’t stop my father. We’re on our way. We’re coming to your house.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I said. The roka was even more surprising because Aishwarya’s father, Krishnaraj Rai, was out of town. Usually, such important ceremonies are attended by both parents, but Aishwarya’s father had to attend over the phone. “So this happens with a call to my father who is out of town,” he said, showing how unexpected the situation was. Aishwarya’s mother Brindya Rai was also surprised by the turn of events.

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have been married for 17 years. The couple has a daughter named Aaradhya Bachchan. Divorce rumors began earlier this year when Aishwarya Rai Bachchan chose to attend Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani’s son Anant Ambani’s wedding to Radhika Merchant alone, along with her daughter.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was also seen attending the SIIMA Awards alone, accompanied only by Aaradhya Bachchan. The absence of Abhishek Bachchan and the fact that none of the Bachchan family members reacted to his win also angered the fans.
