Bears Backfield with Pad Pass Rush and Roster Movements

It looks like the Bears are considering a pass rush against the Washington Commanders.

They activated edge rusher Jacob Martin from injured reserve along with special teams and third down Travis Homer while making a few more carries.

Martin exited the first day of training camp with a toe injury, opening the 21-day window to bring him back on October 9th. Martin is in his eighth season and has almost always been a situational, rushing player. He started just 15 of 91 games and had 18 career tackles for loss, 32 QB hits and 57 pressures. He played in every game for Indianapolis last year, producing two sacks and four pressures in 191 defensive plays.

This could mean the Bears don’t have Daniel Hardy or Austin Booker active for the game, as they will already have starters Montez Sweat and DeMarcus Walker available along with Martin along with Darrell Taylor. Facing Washington’s athletic playmakers with as much speed as they can muster up front could be beneficial.

Homer’s availability will inevitably lead to some speculation about whether Khalil Herbert will be traded, even though the two are completely different types of backs. Homer is a receiving threat and a good pass blocker, while Herbert is by far the better ball carrier. Homer has 86 career carries over six NFL seasons, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. He has 52 receptions for 464 yards.

The Bears’ other move was to promote safety Tarvarius Moore from the practice squad to the 53-man roster via standard promotion.

They also announced that backup tackle Larry Borom will not be coming off injured reserve at this time. Borom, who suffered an ankle injury, was excluded from the squad. The 21-day training window for Borom opened this week, as did Homer.
