Surprise, surprise: The Tigers (once again) are outstanding at QB.

Garrett Nussmeier isn’t yet worthy of comparison to Joe Burrow or Jayden Daniels, but he’s been very good in his first five seasons in Baton Rouge.

The fourth-year junior opened the season by tearing apart the Trojans, completing 29-of-38 passes for 304 yards, 2 TDs and 1 interception, and hasn’t looked back since. This season, he threw for 300 yards or more in five of his seven starts and proved to be a key player in wins over both South Carolina and Ole Miss.

LSU outscored both the Gamecocks and Rebels in the fourth quarter but got the win thanks to the last-second heroics of Nussmeier, who led a game-winning drive at Columbia and culminated in a short TD run with 1:12 on the clock.

Nussmeier also excelled in his team’s thrilling win over Ole Miss on Oct. 12. He threw the game-tying TD to Aaron Anderson with just 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter and then added a 25-yard game-winning strike. Kyren Lacy in overtime.

But what makes LSU a threat in the SEC is its vastly improved defense. The Tigers lost three games last year despite having one of the best offenses in the country. However, they are allowing just 20.6 points per game this year and currently boast the nation’s No. 38 defense. According to ESPN’s SP+.

Despite losing star LB Harold Perkins, who tore his ACL in a win over UCLA on Sept. 21, the Tigers lost by just six second-half points to high-flying Ole Miss. In addition to Nussmeier’s heroics, LSU got a monster 18-yarder. He picks up the night with a win by rising star linebacker Whit Weeks against Jaxson Dart and Co.

If Weeks and the LSU D can continue to play at a high level, this would be a legitimate contender in the SEC and College Football Playoff.

Texas A&M Betting News, Analysis

The Aggies played well defensively in the loss to Notre Dame, but their offensive performance against the Irish left a lot to be desired.

Highly touted QB Conner Weigman threw for just 100 yards against the Irish while completing 12-of-30 pass attempts with zero touchdowns and two picks. Hot take: No matter how good your defense is, you can’t beat good teams without better playing your offense as a whole and your quarterback in particular.

But Weigman, who missed three games with a shoulder injury (all games A&M won against superior opponents), has been in much better shape since returning to the field with his team’s 41-10 win over then-undefeated No. 9 Missouri.

Last week, the Aggies gave up 362 yards of offense in a road win over Mississippi State, but held the Bulldogs at bay in a 34-24 victory as 21.5-point favorites in Starkville.

If there was a red flag in the win against MSU, it was Weigman, who went 15/25 for 217 yards, 1 TD, and 2 interceptions. For his team to avoid another disappointing home loss in prime time, he will (obviously) need to play like he did against Missouri and avoid the mistakes he made against both Notre Dame and Mississippi State.

LSU vs Texas A&M Prediction, Best Bets

If we haven’t made it clear already, we feel a lot more about Nussmeier in this game than his opponent on the opposite end. A&M is good enough defensively to stay that close, and Kyle Field’s home crowd is as loud as anywhere in the country, which could give first-year coach Mike Elko a clear win.

But we think another big night is more likely for Nussmeier, who could bounce back in the Heisman standings with another high-profile win. Nussmeier, meanwhile, is currently +3000 to win the Heisman behind six players on DraftKings.

They may need another comeback in the fourth quarter to pull it off, but we’ll take the Tigers as they sit at +100 on the moneyline.
