A Bengaluru woman’s memoir of a lonely Diwali five years ago struck a chord online as she shared how a small act of kindness turned her difficult day around.

Surbhi Jain, founder of Neend App, a health and wellness app, recalled the bittersweet Diwali she spent in Bengaluru while her friends and colleagues celebrated with family elsewhere.

Jain, an IIT Bombay graduate, shared that the only “Happy Diwali” wish he made in person that day came from an unexpected source: food delivery agent Ramesh, who brought his meal with a warm smile.

“I was in Bangalore for Diwali five years ago and it was a truly sad and lonely day. All my friends, roommates and colleagues had gone home,” he said in a post on X.

“The only person who personally wished me a ‘Happy Diwali’ when I was home alone in a large society was Ramesh, the delivery boy who brought food with a warm smile,” he said.

“Let us remember to show kindness to those who brighten our days, even in small ways,” Jain said, while urging people to remember and appreciate those who bring light to the lives of others in small but meaningful ways.

Jain’s post resonated deeply with users; many people shared their own stories of loneliness and unexpected kindness during the festivities.

“I will go through this this Diwali due to work and not being able to return home,” said one user.

“This is what I love about our country. Many of us who pursue career goals or start businesses forget to take a break and wish others well-being or wish them a happy Diwali. People like Ramesh always make us think which is more important in life,” said another user.

Several people also shared similar experiences of being away from home on Diwali: “Last Diwali, I was alone in Mumbai and was greeted by almost every delivery boy, regardless of their religion. For some, not going home is a choice; for others, it is a privilege they cannot afford.”
