Martha Stewart has revealed she kissed a stranger at a cathedral while on her honeymoon with ex-husband Andrew Stewart.

In the upcoming Netflix documentary “Martha,” 83-year-old lifestyle expert She recalled that she and Andrew, who married in 1961, decided to go on an extended five-month honeymoon in Europe after their wedding.

During an on-camera interview with director RJ Cutler, Stewart recalled that the former couple arrived in Florence, Italy, the night before Easter. The TV personality revealed that she was staying in Andrew’s hotel room while she visited the famous Duomo Florence Cathedral alone.

“She didn’t want to go to the Duomo with me,” Stewart said of his ex-wife. “Hearing that amazing music in the cathedral… It was a very romantic place, full of tourists, and I met a very handsome man.”

He continued: “He didn’t know I was married. I was a lonely girl hanging out in the cathedral on Easter Eve. It was emotional. I was emotional. Because this was an emotional place. It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. A large dome. It’s beautiful and there are paintings all around you.”

“It was unlike anything I’d ever done before,” Stewart added. “So why don’t you kiss a stranger?”

“Do you know what the word I was looking for was?” Cutler asked.

“Naughty?” Stuart replied to this.

“Was it mischief or disloyalty?” the director asked.

“None,” said Stewart. “It wasn’t naughty or infidelity. It was just the emotion of the moment. That’s how I looked at it. It was exciting because, I mean, it was a very emotional place. I wish we could all experience an evening like that.”

Stewart and Andrew They met in 1960 after his sister set them up on a blind date. At the time, he was attending Barnard College in New York City and he was a 23-year-old student at Yale Law School.

In the documentary, Stewart, who was raised by a middle-class family in Nutley, New Jersey, recalled being impressed when Andrew drove her to their first date in a yellow Mercedes sedan.

“I’ve never been in a Mercedes before,” he said. “We went out to dinner. He was very polite and handsome, very well-traveled. He was exciting to me; a cultured young man. He also had an American Express card, which was very important in those days. And he was just intriguing and humorous and nice. By the end of dinner “I was madly in love with her.”

Stewart recalled visiting Andrew every weekend while studying at Yale and that she had never slept with a man before her future husband. The couple got married after a year of dating.

While speaking with Cutler, Stewart recalled admiring the landscapes and cuisine in Europe and dreading their return to New York City after their honeymoon.

“I was 19 and didn’t want to go home,” Stewart said. “We returned to New York and reality collapsed.”

Stewart and the broadcaster welcomed their only child. daughter Alexis, In 1965. In the documentary, the businesswoman admitted that she initially had mixed feelings about motherhood.

“Back then, everyone was having babies at a very young age,” Stewart said. “It was kind of like style, and I thought it was a natural thing. And it turns out being a mother is not natural at all.”

“He wasn’t happy at home,” Stewart said of Andrew. “I don’t know how many different girlfriends he had during this time, but I think he had quite a few.”

“Young women, take my advice, if you’re married and your husband starts cheating on you, he’s an asshole,” she said. “Get out of this marriage.”

“But I couldn’t do that. I couldn’t walk away,” he admitted.

“Didn’t you have an affair early in your relationship?” Cutler asked.

“Yes, but I don’t think Andy knows that,” Stewart replied.

“He said he knew that,” Cutler said.

“Did he do that?” Martha asked.

“Yes, you confessed to him,” Cutler replied. “He says he didn’t leave the marriage until you told him you were already straying.”

Stewart responded, “Oh, that’s not true. I don’t think so.”

“But what happened?” Cutler asked. “You were in a relationship.”

“I had a very brief relationship with a very attractive Irishman,” Stewart said. “And it was nothing. It was nothing. In the sense that…that would never break up a marriage. And I would never break up a marriage over that.”

“It was nothing,” he repeated. “Nothing. It was like the kiss in the cathedral.”

In “Martha” Stewart also accused Andrew of cheating on her with his former assistant Robyn Fairclough.

“Robyn was working for me and had lost her apartment or something,” he recalled.

Stewart said she told Fairclough that the cookbook author could move into a barn on the property she shared with Andrew.

“Andy started with it while I was traveling,” Stewart said. “It was like I was making a snack for Andy.”

When asked if he confronted Fairclough, Stewart confirmed this and “immediately dismissed him.”

“You know what, what the hell are you doing? Andy betrayed me. It’s right on our property,” Stewart said.

“It’s not nice,” he added.

Andrew married Fairclough, 21 years his junior, in May 1993, three years after his divorce from Martha. However, they later divorced.

Andrew is currently married to Shyla Stewart. According to the company’s website, Shyla is the president and CEO of the publishing company Fieldstone Publishing, and Andrew is the company’s retired publisher. The couple shares five children, according to People magazine.

Stewart did not remarry, although she was in an on-off relationship with billionaire Charles Simonyi for 15 years until they split in 2008. During a 2022 episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Stewart revealed that she had dated before. Anthony Hopkins but broke up with him because she “couldn’t stop thinking of him as Hannibal Lecter.”

Hopkins played serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 horror thriller “The Silence of the Lambs” and won an Academy Award for his performance.

In a recent interview people magazine, Stewart revealed that she and Andrew had not spoken in twenty years.

“I haven’t talked to him in over 20 years,” she told the outlet. “Unfortunately.”
