Premature baby found alive after family took him from hospital in Paris

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — A premature baby taken from a Paris hospital by his parents was found alive with them in an Amsterdam hotel on Friday, four days after their disappearance sparked a cross-border search, authorities said.

Eric Mathais, chief prosecutor of the Seine-Saint-Denis region north of Paris, said, “Santiago’s parents were found in a hotel in the Amsterdam region of the Netherlands. The baby was with them. He is alive and receiving medical treatment.” in a statement.

Amsterdam police said in a message to X that “today they arrested a man and a woman in a hotel in the center of Amsterdam on suspicion of kidnapping their premature baby.”

“The baby is currently being hospitalized to receive the care he needs.”

The child was born eight weeks premature and required 24-hour care.

French authorities had issued a European arrest warrant for the parents.

Late on Monday evening – just 17 days after his birth – Santiago’s parents, aged 23 and 25, picked him up from the neonatal unit of the Robert Ballanger hospital in Aulnay-sous-Bois, northeast of Paris.

Authorities issued a nationwide abduction alert and appealed to the public for information.

The couple was later said to have fled to neighboring Belgium with the baby.

Mathais said the reason for their escape was not yet known, but the parents were probably afraid of losing custody of the baby.

A man, a minor and a woman linked to the parents were arrested in Seine-Saint-Denis on Tuesday morning and charged in connection with the taking of the baby.

The two men remained in custody Friday “after admitting they accompanied the couple and their baby as they fled to Belgium,” prosecutors said Thursday.
