At least 46 people were killed and dozens were likely injured or missing as Tropical Storm Trami ravaged the Philippines on Friday, government officials said.

Trami, known locally as hurricane “Kristine,” reached the town of Divilican in the northeastern province of Isabela early Thursday morning.

Trami dumped about 8-15 inches or more of rain on parts of the archipelago along its westward path across the Philippine crest.

For reference, Manila, the capital city on Luzon, typically experiences around 100 inches of rainfall per year.

This downpour caused devastating floods and landslides, destroying homes and displacing many Filipinos across the country.

The deaths occurred mostly in the northern region of the Philippines; 28 from Bicol province, 15 from Calabarzon, one from Ilocos and one from Central Luzon. One death was reported from the southern region of the Zamboanga Peninsula.

It was reported that seven more people were injured and 20 people were missing.

“I promise our people this: Help is on the way. It will come by land, by air and even by sea,” Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said in a post on his former Twitter account, X.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, or PAGASA, said Trami is currently in the West Philippine Sea.

However, Trami is expected to turn counterclockwise towards the Philippines on Sunday and Monday, according to PAGASA.

It may continue its path eastward and possibly return to the Philippines, but this depends on the behavior of another storm, Tropical Cyclone KONG-REY.
