McLaren makes improvements for Mexican GP as it looks to regain its edge over F1 rivals

McLaren sought to respond to the disappointing US Grand Prix by introducing improvements to its cars for the Mexican Grand Prix.

McLaren, who took a comfortable victory in Singapore, returned from the summer break with arguably the third fastest car after Red Bull and Ferrari made big gains in Austin.

Updates on Mexican Grand Prix emerge as title challengers make changes

McLaren

Before the race in Mexico, McLaren made the second most changes to the car with three upgrades, two of which were track-specific.

Wanting to combat the high altitude and high temperatures in Central America, the team made track-specific changes on the engine cover and cooling shutter.

But the upgrade that might be the most interesting is the revised floor, which McLaren says includes “geometric changes in all areas” to increase aerodynamic load in all conditions.

Red Bull

McLaren isn’t the only championship contender to make changes to its car, but Red Bull’s changes are all track-specific.

Red Bull expanded the volume of the central upper body in the engine cover and the team said: “Given the environmental conditions specific to this track, RBR requires a larger PU cooling outlet and chose to modify the central part of the upper body to achieve the expected performance.” capacity.”

The other change comes in the front corner, which was also enlarged for similar reasons.

Ferrari

This is the only change for Ferrari, introducing special cooling shutters to the circuit to increase cooling capacity at the expense of the car’s efficiency.

VCARB

The team that will make the most changes is VCARB, which has two half-time changes and two more permanent changes.

Permanent changes are located on the floor, while circuit-specific ones improve airflow in the engine cover and cooling louvers.

VCABR has made modifications to the slope of the ground fences to reduce downward aerodynamic losses, and the ground edge airfoils have been modified to increase aerodynamic load.

Williams

Williams became the last team to make changes, with a track-specifically modified beam wing and engine cover.

The other five teams brought no upgrades to Mexico City.
