ELKINS, W.Va (WDTV) – Elkins Middle School was closed Friday due to water issues and air quality concerns.

The closure occurred Thursday after roofing contractors placed a bucket of non-toxic glue near a fresh air intake, creating smoke and odor in part of the school, according to Randolph County Schools Superintendent Shawn Dilly.

To address the situation, officials said they closed air intakes, opened windows and doors for ventilation and relocated some students to minimize the impact of the odor.

As a precaution, the fire department and gas company conducted a thorough inspection of the building and no elevated levels of carbon monoxide were detected, Dilly said.

Officials said they encourage families to “seek medical attention if their child develops any symptoms” and “suggest that you check your home for high levels of carbon monoxide as an extra safety precaution.”

The school is equipped with carbon monoxide detectors throughout the HVAC system that provide constant safety monitoring, officials said.

“Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our students and staff is always our top priority and we are taking these steps to ensure a safe environment,” Dilly said. “We will continue to collaborate with the State Fire Marshal, local fire departments, emergency management and air quality experts to ensure a safe environment for our students.
