Appellate Division upholds bail request of Rana Plaza owner

The Supreme Court Appellate Division upheld the decision to release Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana on six-month bail granted by the Supreme Court.

The Appellate Division also gave him two months to strike down the Supreme Court’s rule asking why he should not be granted permanent bail.

The Appellate Division bench headed by Senior Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam passed the order after hearing on the petition filed on behalf of the state today (October 28).

While Additional Solicitor General Mohammad Arshadur Rauf represented the state at the hearing, Rana was represented by lawyer Shishir Monir.

Rana’s lawyer Şişir said in a statement to journalists, “Although Rana is free on bail in all other cases, he cannot leave prison because he cannot be released on bail in this case. His release now depends on the decision of the HC after his release.” rule.”

On October 1, a HC bench comprising Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan and Justice KM Hafizul Alam granted 6 months bail to Rana. The bench also issued a rule asking why he should not be granted permanent bail.

The state then filed a petition with the Appellate Division seeking a stay of enforcement of this rule.

On October 2, the Appellate Division chamber court withdrew the bail petition and sent it to a full panel for hearing.

On April 6, 2023, a HC bench comprising Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Shahed Nuruddin accepted Rana’s bail plea.

The state prosecutor’s office then requested a postponement of bail.

On April 9, 2023, the chamber court of the Appellate Division postponed Rana’s bail decision until May 8, 2023 and set a date for the hearing.

On May 8, the Appellate Division suspended Rana’s bail until July 10 and set a date for the hearing on the appeal petition.

Later, the hearing date was postponed for 6 months and January 15 was set for the next hearing of the matter.

On January 15, 2024, the Appellate Bench headed by former chief justice Obaidul Hassan directed the judicial court to decide the case within six months.

Rana applied for bail once again as the case was not concluded within six months.

At least 1,136 people lost their lives when the RMG factory Rana Plaza in the Savar Bus Stand area collapsed on April 24, 2013.

On April 29, Rana, owner of Rana Plaza Sohel, was arrested while trying to escape to India through Jashore’s Benapole border.
