Hong Kong police installed 504 CCTVs in 8 months, leading to 72 arrests and 46 cases solved

Hong Kong police have installed more than 500 security cameras across the city in the past eight months, helping officers solve 46 cases and arrest 72 people.

Acting Superintendent Fung Chun-pang of the force’s operations wing said the 46 cases solved on Sunday included a murder, robbery and several cases involving trio gangsters with imitation firearms.

Fung said that a total of 504 security cameras have been installed throughout the city since March.

“Police will continue to select suitable locations in all 18 districts to install CCTV cameras and aim to install a total of 2,000 sets by 2025,” he said.

He added that the force will actively examine various technological solutions based on experiences from around the world to further improve overall public safety and order.

According to police, 50 security cameras – almost a tenth of the 504 cameras installed – have been installed around the city’s central entertainment hub, Lan Kwai Fong.

Police Commissioner Raymond Siu Chak-yee told the Post in an exclusive interview last week that cameras in the party area crowd counting capacity For upcoming Halloween festivities, with facial recognition technology to be added next year.
