Belgrave Road will also be closed and all its junctions and side roads will be off-limits between 5pm and 9.30pm, the authority said.

The Hindu festival of lights was previously celebrated with two events – the light switch-on event and the Diwali Day event – but the first one will not take place this year as the city council tries to save money.

Parking will be suspended on the following roads:

Vehicles left on these streets will be fined and towed, and drivers will be warned.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said this was to allow emergency vehicles and council staff to clear roads in the area.

The restrictions will be valid until 22:00 on Diwali Day.
