Haryana Police on Sunday (October 27) said it had launched an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment against Jind SP Sumit Kumar after a letter allegedly detailing the ordeal of a woman constable surfaced online. Based on the information disclosed, a fact-finding investigation has been launched and a detailed report will be submitted soon.

“An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the facts. The matter is under investigation,” Hisar Range Additional DGP M. Ravi Kiran said, adding that the accused himself had demanded a thorough investigation into the matter.

Significantly, Fatehabad Police Commissioner Astha Modi has been tasked to conduct the investigation and submit the report to the ministry.

About the incident

A letter allegedly written by a woman police officer and sent to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has revealed disturbing allegations against the Jind SP. The police officer on duty in the district alleged that the senior official had sexually harassed her and claimed that two female police personnel in the district supported the officer involved in the incident.

He also stated that if no action was taken, he would have no choice but to take his own life. Notably, the letter detailing the ordeal was reportedly signed by seven female police officers.

Vinesh Phogat demanded punishment of the culprit

Moreover, wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat demanded that the culprits be punished. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Julana MLA said she had little hope that “the Haryana government or the Center will do justice to these women in Haryana Police”.

“Their voices may have been suppressed or are being suppressed every day… But just as every segment of society supported us, we and the entire society stand by them. The criminals must be punished.”
