Westlake city officials recently installed and dedicated a park bench on the grounds of the recreation center near the pond in honor of the legacy of former city employee Steve Applegate.

He served the City of Westlake for 14 years. Applegate began his career in 1988 and served as the Recreation Director of the Westlake Recreation Center from 1998 until 2002, when it opened. During the dedication ceremony, Mayor Dennis Clough highlighted how Applegate was instrumental in the planning process and opening of the recreation facility. .

Applegate’s daughter, Lauren, passed away in May, and a group of family friends donated a Magnolia tree in her memory, which was planted near the bench. His favorite color was purple, and the tree will bloom purple flowers in the spring.

GULF VILLAGE

Winter courses, holiday shop: Registration for winter courses for adults and children has started at BAYArts. Programs include ceramics, painting, jewelry and writing.

Thanks to the new fund created by BAYarts’ BAYarts Friends Support Board, scholarships can also be received for attending classes.

Technology time: Bay Village High School students will once again be able to work one-on-one with seniors at the Bay Village Senior Center at 300 Bryson Lane, helping them with electronic devices. Kindergarten countdown: Preschoolers can hone their kindergarten readiness skills with a program aligned to Ohio’s Early Childhood Standards from 10 to 11 a.m. Nov. 9 at the Bay Village Branch Library, 27400 Wolf Road.

PBIS awards: All five Bay Village school district buildings have been recognized for the implementation of PBIS programs (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), including Bronview status and Silver for Glenview Child Care and Learning Center, Bay Middle School, and Bay High School (in its first year of participation). status for Westerly Elementary School and Gold status for Normandy Elementary School.

ROCKY RIVER

Quilt and craft show: The 34th annual Harvest Craft and Quilt Show will take place Nov. 1-2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center at 21014 Hilliard Blvd. Entrance fee is $8 for 2 days, $5 for 1 day. Various musical entertainment will be organized at the event. Tea tasting will be held on November 2 at 9.30 am.

Leaf collection: Mass leaf collection will begin on November 4. Until then, please collect the leaves in garden waste bags.

During fall leaf collection, the Service Department and leaf collection trucks will operate one pass throughout the city each week, but this is not always possible. Occasional delays occur due to weather, equipment or heavy leaf density, according to information posted on the city’s website.

Leaf pickup dates may not coincide with residents’ trash pickup dates. Residents can keep up with daily leaf progress by following the Rocky River Service Department on Facebook. facebook.com/rockyriverservice.

Please note that you should rake leaves into tree lawns and ensure piles are easily accessible. Leaves should not be placed on the street as they can clog drains and pose a traffic hazard. Additionally, cars should not block access to foliage on city tree lawns.

Place garden waste such as brush, garden utensils and grass clippings in a brown bag to collect on regular garbage collection day. These substances should not be included in your leaves as they may cause blockages in our leaf collection equipment.

Hello to the service: Last week, Rocky River High School hosted Salute to Service Week before the Oct. 25 football game against Bay Village High School.

Highlights of the week included the display of flags along Detroit Road to the Rocky River High School stadium and the unveiling of the POW/MIA Chair of Honor at the stadium prior to the football game.

Part of Junior Henry Ward’s Eagle Scout project, the seat was specially marked to serve as a visual reminder to honor Veterans/POW/MIA and the sacrifices they made while serving. Veterans and active military were also recognized in the game.

New restaurant: Renovations are underway at 21810 Center Ridge Road, the former Chase Bank location, for a new Scramblers restaurant.

Tony D’Agostino is opening the Rocky River location, which will join two other west side locations in North Olmsted and Strongsville. The new location will be its sixth restaurant in the Cleveland area, along with Mentor, Mayfield Heights and Belden Village.

If construction continues as planned, he hopes to open the Rocky River location by the first week of January.

Yell: Rocky River Middle School volleyball teams raised more than $6,000 to donate to breast cancer research at the Volley for the Cure event earlier this month.

The eighth grade team also captured the Cleveland Western Conference (CWC) tournament championship.

Annual holiday honor: Westlake Town Criers is accepting nominations for the Mr. and Mrs. Westlake awards. This honor is given to individuals who contribute to the well-being of Westlake’s youth and citizens.

The pair will be announced during the city’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, sponsored by Westlake Town Criers, on Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Library research: Westlake Porter Public Library officials are seeking public input on technology programs at the library.

Yell: Congratulations to Westlake Police Department Lieutenant Brian Pasti, who officially retired after 36 years of service.

Pasti began his career as a patrol officer and over the years took on significant responsibilities as an instructor, sergeant, accident investigator and Detective Bureau commander. His leadership expanded further when he became the SWAT commander and played a role as the founder and leader of the department’s Drone Unit.
