F1 driver calls out FIA after Liam Lawson’s move went unpunished

Red Bull F1 driver Sergio Perez expressed his disappointment with the FIA following the incident in which he had an argument with fellow driver Liam Lawson at the Mexico City Grand Prix, without any penalty being given.

Perez started his home race from 18th after a difficult qualifying session in Mexico, his worst since joining Red Bull in 2021. The session was plagued by brake problems on the Red Bull RB20 car. To add to his problems, Perez received a five-second penalty for incorrectly positioning himself on the grid at the start of the race.

The most notable incident involves an on-track clash with Liam Lawson, who is seen as a potential successor to the Mexican driver next year. Perez was in the process of passing Lawson for 10th place on Lap 11 when he found himself pushed to the outside and suffered serious damage to the side of his car.

Making statements to the press after the race Perez explained.:

“I think we looked great at the start, but because of the penalty I think we should have taken the points today.

“We were making progress, Liam and I were about to take points early in the race. I had the position, I was ahead at Turn 5; he was off the track when he was about to come back, I didn’t expect him to make a move like that.” continue straight.

“He blocked the whole side of the car but I don’t think it’s his fault because he doesn’t get any penalties.

“He did the same thing to Fernando (Alonso) last weekend, he did the same thing to Franco (Colapinto) at the end of the race and he didn’t get a penalty, so maybe the punishment you get depends on who you are.”

Lawson’s lack of a penalty is a sad point for Perez, who believes the incident needlessly ruined the race.

“Yeah, I just told him I thought we blew both our races; I was ahead, we didn’t need to come together at that point. It was the 11th lap of the race, he was just risking our race for both of us. I’m not doing it.” “I don’t think this is a very smart move.”

Despite intense scrutiny over his future at Red Bull, Perez has a two-year contract extension with the Austrian team. However, questions remain regarding his future, especially as Lawson has shown strong potential and is being considered for the Red Bull seat in 2025.
