Cypress Ranch High School student charged with assault after brutal attack that left classmate nearly blind in one eye

cypress, Texas (KTRK) — A Cypress teenager is facing serious charges after allegedly assaulting one of his classmates.

According to authorities, the incident occurred in a Cypress Ranch High School classroom on the morning of Nov. 11.

Victim Anthony Vasquez said he spent six days in the hospital and nearly lost an eye.

“I was thinking, ‘I could be dying right now.’ Like, ‘I could be dead,'” Vasquez said.

The suspect, identified as Donovan Hernandez in court records, allegedly approached Vasquez from behind while he was talking to a teacher.

Vasquez said he wasn’t aware that Hernandez was already in the classroom.

“All of a sudden I feel great pain in the back of my head and in my eye…like on the left side of my face,” Vasquez said. he said.

The 17-year-old said he was eventually thrown over some tables and fell to the floor.

He claims he was prone and did not respond at that point.

“He kept punching me, right? And I said, ‘I’m getting hurt. I’m going to try to stop him.’ So I grabbed both of his wrists and held them tight,” Vasquez said.

Vasquez said administrators and Cy-fair ISD police ultimately intervened.

Hernandez has since been arrested and faces charges of assault causing bodily injury.

The school district confirmed that the attack occurred but said only that it was under investigation.

ABC13’s Alex Bozarjian asks, “Why do you think he did this?” he asked.

“We’ve had a few problems in the past, but I was always like, ‘Hey, we can talk it out,'” Vasquez said. he said.

According to Vasquez, his problems were because of a girl.

The attorney representing Hernandez told ABC13 that his client reached a boiling point after being constantly harassed by Vasquez.

Vasquez claims they haven’t spoken since last year.

“I always thought, ‘I don’t know what he could do to me,'” Vasquez said. “I felt really paranoid.”

Vasquez had surgery on his eye and said he has been coughing up blood since leaving the hospital.

His family hopes it’s not all in vain. They want change, so they started an Instagram page to start a conversation about bullying and violence in schools.

“You really don’t want this to happen to anyone, and it’s not a good feeling,” Vasquez said.
