NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz Department of Theater Arts’ staging of “Trouble in Mind” begins a two-week run at the university’s Parker Theater on Friday, November 22 at 8 p.m.

Written by playwright Alice Childress in 1955, this play-within-a-play tells the story of middle-aged black actress Wiletta Mayer, who takes on her first leading role after a career playing stereotypical characters.

“The curtain rises on the first day of rehearsals for the Broadway play “Chaos in Belleville,” in which Mayer starred for the first time in his career, dealing with the harsh realities of racism in America,” it said in an announcement. “But when these facts spread from the play to the rehearsal hall, the question of Mayer’s dignity Will his persistence cost him the work he desperately needs?

Additional evening performances are on November 23 and December 5, 6, and 7 at 8 p.m. Sunday Matinee performances are on November 24 and December 8 at 14:00.
