Syrian state media reported that 36 people died in Israeli attack on Palmyra

Syrian state media reported that 36 people were killed and more than 50 injured in an attack on the country’s historic city of Palmyra on Wednesday. Damascus held Israel responsible for the attack.

The Israeli army declined to comment.

SANA news agency said the attacks also caused serious damage to the targeted buildings and the surrounding area. Palmyra is known for its nearby historic Roman temple complex.

Israel frequently targets military installations and facilities linked to Iran-linked groups in Syria but rarely acknowledges the attacks. The death toll from Wednesday’s strike was unusually high. It was not immediately clear whether the remains were damaged.

The temple complex was severely damaged years ago during attacks by the Islamic State group in Syria.

In 2015, the world watched in horror as militants blew up an iconic arch and temple in Palmyra. Since ISIS lost control of the region, restoration efforts in the region have been hampered by security issues, remaining landmines and lack of funding.

The attack in Syria comes as negotiations for a possible ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group are ongoing, but it is unclear whether the ceasefire will include Syria.
