The Urgent Question is now being asked about the use of hotels to house refugees.

Home Secretary Dame Angela Eagle says Labor is “absolutely determined” to end this, but argues the government provides “safe, secure, appropriate” accommodation and ensures asylum seekers are “treated with dignity”.

He adds: “Hotels are not a permanent solution, but a temporary step necessary to keep the system under control and not fall into chaos.”

‘Devastating news’

Sir Gavin Williamson, who asked the Urgent Question, said his constituents had received “devastating news” that a hotel in the area was “to be equipped to host refugees”.

“This was after it was closed last year,” he says, pointing out that Canal crossings have increased since Labor came to power compared to the same period last year.

He accuses the government of a “lack of transparency” and wants a list of all hotels that will be “set up” to host migrants.

More immigrant hotels than before the election

Dame Angela responded by saying Labor had “inherited a stalled asylum system” because of its “broken” Rwanda policy.

He states that 220 hotels are currently in use.

213 facilities were in use at the time of the election, but since July, 7 have closed and 14 have opened.
