Man shot by officers after stabbing construction worker, attacked police with knife

A Jacksonville man is in critical condition at the hospital after being shot by two officers Monday night. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 39-year-old Benjamin Kubi. Police said he walked up to a construction worker directing traffic at a construction site at Interstate 295 and N. Main Street at 10:42 p.m.

Kubi got out of his vehicle and stabbed the construction worker, JSO said at a press conference at the scene Wednesday morning. The construction worker ran to his supervisor and said he had been stabbed. The chief called the off-duty Jacksonville officer working the scene and said, “‘Hey, this guy just stabbed our worker,'” JSO said.

The off-duty police officer chased Kubi in his vehicle in what JSO described as a short car chase. Another nearby Jacksonville officer joined the chase. About four miles later, Kubi got out of his car in the 400 block of Duval Station Road and officers ordered him to get on the ground and show his hands, JSO said.

Kubi did not comply with officers’ commands and the off-duty officer attempted to Tase him, but it was not effective, JSO said. Police said Kubi then attacked one of the officers with a knife and they both shot him.

Police said they did not believe Kubi knew the construction worker and that the stabbing appeared random. Police said the worker was “okay.”

The suspect is known to JSO

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Chief of Investigations Alan Parker said Kubi was known to JSO for his actions in October. That’s when police said Kubi approached an officer who was dealing with a traffic accident. “He made the finger gesture and said ‘you’re a dead man,'” Parker said, making the shape of a gun.

“The officer said ‘what did you say to me?’ he said. and he (Kubi) repeated himself.” Parker said. Kubi drove off and the officer took Kubi’s vehicle tag information and prepared a report, Parker said.

Parker said that Kubi was also charged with a domestic battery in 2019.
