US Embassy in Kiev closed after receiving warning of ‘significant’ Russian airstrike

The US Embassy in Kiev announced that it would close its doors after receiving a warning of a potentially significant airstrike.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The U.S. Embassy in Kiev said it received a warning of a potentially significant Russian airstrike on Wednesday and would close as a precaution.

In its statement, the embassy also instructed employees to shelter in place and also recommended that U.S. citizens in Kiev be ready to seek shelter immediately in the event of a weather alert.

The warning was unusual in its specificity, as Russian airstrikes have become a common, almost daily occurrence in Ukraine.

But this came a day after Moscow said US-made long-range missiles were used in a Ukrainian attack that hit a weapons depot in the Bryansk region after US President Joe Biden authorized their use.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in September that if Western countries allow Ukraine to attack deep into Russia with its long-range weapons, “this will mean that NATO countries, the United States and European countries are at war with Russia.”

“And if this is the case, then we will make appropriate decisions based on the threats that will be posed to us, keeping in mind the change in the essence of the conflict,” Putin said.

Russia has recently stepped up its air strikes, launching complex combined drone and missile bombardments to target energy infrastructure this week as temperatures began to drop.
