Police drone unit identifies burglary suspect at Bard College

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY — A burglary suspect spotted by a Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office drone unit at Bard College Saturday morning was captured, authorities said. The incident began around 4 a.m. when deputies responded to a report of forced entry into a campus building where artwork was stolen.

The suspect, whose name was identified as Artin Krasniqi from Red Hook, New York, fled on foot after the theft. The Sheriff’s Office UAS (Drone) Unit was deployed using a thermal imaging camera and spotlight to search the surrounding area. Drone operators located Krasniqi hiding in a nearby wooded area and relayed his location to deputies on the ground, who then took him into custody.

The case was then turned over to the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau. Krasniqi was charged with one count of third-degree burglary and was released on probation as required by law, authorities said.

“The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office UAS Unit routinely responds to assist the DCSO Patrol Bureau and numerous other agencies in a variety of emergencies, including fleeing criminals,” the Sheriff’s Office said in an online statement.

While no injuries were sustained in the incident, the stolen artwork was recovered. Further information regarding the nature of the stolen items has not yet been released.
