Amazon Driver Allegedly Killed Pedestrian and Continued Delivery Route

A 79-year-old Georgia woman died after an Amazon delivery driver allegedly struck and killed her and then continued on his delivery route, authorities said.

London Best, 24, of Alpharetta, was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 12, and charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run in connection with the death of Sandra Fitts of Canton, the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office said. in a statement sent to PEOPLE.

Fitts had just visited the gravesite of a loved one and was shot and killed while crossing the street. Atlanta Magazine-Constitution, WSB-TV, WSAZ 3 reported.

On the night of November 12, around 6:30 p.m. local time, deputies responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian on the Cumming Highway near Jordan Lane.

Deputies arriving at the scene claimed to have found evidence that the vehicle involved in the crash was likely an Amazon delivery truck, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“While responding to the crash, a deputy noticed an Amazon truck turning onto Bishop Drive and called for assistance to the area to search for the vehicle,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. he said.

A Canton Police officer located an Amazon truck on Bishop Drive with damage consistent with evidence found at the crash scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“The investigation revealed that the Amazon truck in question was the vehicle that hit the pedestrian,” the statement said.

The driver of the vehicle, Best, was arrested and charged in connection with the hit-and-run incident.

“If he had not left the scene, the charges would have been different. He probably would not have committed the crime,” said Capt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. Fox 5 Atlanta.

Additional charges were filed against Best after investigators obtained a search warrant for the van he was driving and allegedly found narcotics inside, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

He faces new charges including possession of less than 1 oz. of Marijuana, possession of a Schedule 1 Narcotic (THC Wax), and possession of drug-related objects.

He is best held without bail at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center. It’s unclear whether he has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf.

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, an Amazon spokesperson said Best could not make any more deliveries for the company pending the outcome of the investigation.
