Ovechkin injured left leg in Capitals win

Alex Ovechkin left the Washington Capitals’ 6-2 victory over the Utah Hockey Club at Delta Center on Monday with an apparent left leg injury.

Washington was waiting for information about Ovechkin’s injury after the game.

“He’s being evaluated as we speak and we’ll know more tomorrow,” Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said.

Ovechkin was slow to get to his feet and was helped to the bench by teammate Jakob Chychrun after he collided with Utah forward Jack McBain at 5:30 of the third period. The 39-year-old captain’s left knee was bent when McBain’s left leg hit his lower left leg.

Ovechkin remained on the bench until a pause following Brandon Duhaime’s goal that extended Washington’s lead to 5-2 at 7:30. During the stoppage, Ovechkin attempted to recover from his injury but appeared in pain before limping to the locker room.

He did not return.

“(It smells),” Capitals forward Nic Dowd said. “I hate to see this. He is definitely a very hot player and very important for our team. He is our captain. You need to score goals to win matches. “He plays incredible hockey, so yeah, I hate to see that.”

Ovechkin scored twice earlier in the game and leads the NHL with 15 goals in 18 games this season. He increased his career total to 868 goals, breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894 with 27 goals.

According to NHL Statistics, Ovechkin became the first player in NHL history aged 39 or older and the first player to score 15 goals in a season in the League. Before Ovechkin, the oldest player to reach 15 goals was Frank Mahovlich, who was 33 years and 304 days old when he scored his 15th goal in his 14th game against the Toronto Maple Leafs for the Montreal Canadiens on November 10. , 1971.

The Capitals have Tuesday off and will head home before practicing on Wednesday. Their next game is on Thursday at Capital One Arena against the Colorado Avalanche (7 p.m. ET; KUSA, MNMT, ALT, SNP, SNO, SNE).
