Devon and Cornwall driving safety drive aims to ‘do some good’

The partnership began in 2021, when 47 deaths and 647 serious injuries were recorded on the roads.

Latest figures show a slight increase in 2023, with 48 deaths and 702 serious injuries.

The partnership’s Adrian Leisk said members were not discouraged because the partnership was still relatively new and more work needed to be done.

He said: “I knocked on doors to tell people their loved ones weren’t coming home, and I also stood at the scene of the crash surveying the devastation, so I personally believed it.

“We need to work harder; we need to engage more partners.

“We’re heading to Westminster to highlight what we’re doing in the South West because we’re now known across the country as driving innovation and changing the way we approach road-related harm.”

Christ Boston, from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said the aim was simple.

He said: “If we can reach one person today and convey the message that they should not drink and drive, not use drugs, wear their seat belt on short or long journeys, look out for each other in the car, and be a sensible driver, then we will have done a good thing.”
