Tony Todd

The horror community is still grieving the loss of the beloved Tony Todd. After all, he was an extraordinary figure and a constant presence in the genre. His lengthy CV spanned over four decades and saw him working in film, television and theatre. He has also lent his iconic voice to many video games, cartoons, and evil creatures like Venom. Spiderman 2. During Todd He proved that he could do anything and chose to become an indispensable part of the genre. its time Star Trek: The Next Generation and movies like this Dr. The Curious Case of Jekyll and Mr Hyde it was a constant reminder that these worlds should and could make room for Black actors. His impact on the generations that grew up watching him claim a place in these worlds will ripple through forever.

Few actors have a consistent workflow like Tony Todd does. It would be impossible to capture them all in one publishing guide without submitting something the length of a novel. That’s why I’ve selected ten movies from his filmography that are notable stops on his resume and are currently streaming. Whether it’s a testament to his ability to deliver award-winning performances in any situation or resetting the culture while birthing a horror icon, these are must-watches as we grieve for one of the most prolific actors in our lifetime.

Candyman (dir. Bernard Rose)

Character: Daniel Robitaille / Candyman

Where to Watch: VOD

A graduate student accidentally summons a deadly urban legend with a hook. I don’t care who you are…Candyman It shook you when you first watched it. It was revolutionary because it gave us a gothic, supernatural horror movie set in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green, something most filmmakers would never do. It was also the first time many of us saw a Black man join the ranks of our favorite horror villains. Tony Todd’s most groundbreaking role is probably the reason why so much of my generation is obsessed with horror. Seeing her navigate this world in style and seek revenge with a hook was life-changing. I highly recommend making this a double feature with Nia DaCosta’s 2021 Candyman to see his work on the franchise come full circle.

The Crow (directed by Alex Proyas)

Character: Grange

Where to Watch: Pluto TV

A musician and his fiancee are murdered the night before their wedding. However, on the anniversary of his death, he rises from the dead and seeks revenge. It’s hard to watch this movie again because it makes me think the late Brandon Lee should still be here. However, it never occurred to me that it was so important for Lee and Tony Todd to be in the same movie. Representation matters, and in 1994 black people had a much harder time getting cast in quality action fantasy films than they do today. Todd may have played a bad guy, but he was still fascinating and showed that you can turn any role into a blast if you’re up for the challenge.

Final Destination (directed by James Wong)

Character: William Bludworth

Where to Watch: VOD

A boy receives a premonition of a plane crash that leads him to unwittingly save himself and a handful of his classmates. But the death of the survivors is not yet complete. Tony Todd’s mysterious character is one of my favorite parts of this movie. Every time he came back for a sequel, I screamed. William is an enigma inspired by Todd’s commanding presence and charm. No matter how often you watch these movies, you feel as if they are giving you new information. William has always been a supporting character, but he’s become the connective tissue of this series. So I’m glad Todd is featured in the new episode, which will unfortunately air after his death.

Hatchet (directed by Adam Green)

Character: Venerable Zombie

Where to Watch: plexiglass And tubi

A group of tourists find themselves stranded in a haunted swamp during a terrifying night. This slasher horror comedy has gained quite a fan base, and we definitely owe that to Tony Todd. He was the reason why I gave this series a chance. Honestly, his role as Priest Zombie in the first two movies is probably the reason most of us came. I like that his character has a surprising arc. But what I really like about this series is that it reminds me that Todd is here for these kinds of kids and their projects. No matter what his role was in the movie, he was always ready to show up, give his name and give you an incredible performance.

Hell Festival (dir. Gregory Plotkin)

Character: Barker

Where to Watch: peacock

A serial killer kills visitors at a Halloween theme park, and bystanders think it’s more of a staged attraction. Tony Todd’s get excited About this role and this movie was infectious. His methodical approach to this character was matched only by the sheer joy with which he orchestrated the deaths of other characters. The gentle giant figured out how to mobilize the threat and have fun doing it. I wish we lived in a world where there were more chances to star in movies he wrote (or co-wrote). Akela Cooper. I can only imagine what strange and deadly projects will emerge from future collaborations.

The Lockdown Hauntings (dir. Howard J. Ford)

Character: Jordan Myers

Where to Watch: Fandango At Home, plexiglass, Prime Minister VideoAnd tubi

A serial killer returned from the dead to claim more victims during global lockdown. Many COVID horror movies were shot during the quarantine. However, they were not lucky enough to have Tony Todd in their squad. Even a global pandemic couldn’t stop Todd from continuing his endless streak in the horror genre. This British-style film also takes advantage of having him open with his iconic voice to set the tone of the film. It’s hard not to be nervous after setting the stage for what’s to come. As always, Todd’s performance was the best part of the experience. But this time he fascinated us through the computer. He still manages to steal the scene every time he’s on screen.

Night of the Living Dead (dir. Tom Savini)

Character: Me

Where to Watch: AMC+

The dead have risen and a small group of strangers are trapped in a remote farmhouse. Original George A. Romero Starring Duane Jones as Ben, the film left big shoes to fill. But who better to step into the role than Tony Todd? Not only did he bring the gravitas and stage presence that made him a household name, he also brought this important Black horror character to new generations. I think this role led many children to go back and discover Romero’s world. This 1990 film is a must watch as we mourn the death of Tony Todd.

Shadow Puppets (dir. Michael Winnick)

Character: Steve

Where to Watch: Philo, plexiglass, Prime Minister Video, Roku Channel, Hanger TVAnd tubi

Eight strangers wake up with amnesia and find themselves stranded in an empty facility. They try to find answers and escape, but their shadows want to consume them. Tony Todd always gave 200% no matter the task. This title is no exception and features Todd as the MVP of the film; a trend that continues when you look at a few sections of his resume. He is the best part of this movie and we are all thankful. His ability to drive every stage should be examined. Todd takes this film to a level it would never have reached without his talents.

Tales from the Hood 3 (directed by Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott)

Character: William

A man tries to escape evil with a boy who tells him four scary stories. I don’t care who you are; when you see something new about to happen Tales from the Hood You thought the world could heal in the movie starring Tony Todd. You probably thought he would follow in the footsteps of Clarence Williams III and Keith David. So we were all surprised when Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott stirred up trouble by not playing a new version of the legendary Mr. Simms. But that was just one of the many surprises in this episode.

Wishmaster (directed by Robert Kurtzman)

A gemologist accidentally releases an evil demon that plays deadly tricks on the people around him. wish master People like Ted Raimi, Kane Hodder and Tom Savini appeared on us with almost rapid fire. But as always, Tony Todd stands out. Johnny Valentine is arguably one of Todd’s most beloved cameos. A lot of guys love this movie, but I think they’re really just here for the Tony Todd effect. No matter her role or screen time, she was captivating and often the most memorable person involved. Tony Todd was naturally extraordinary, so he was always working. This is one of the many reasons why it is so beloved by horror fans.
