Robert and Florence Abert die in nursing home murder-suicide

Rochester police have identified the couple killed in a murder-suicide at a Rochester nursing home on Sunday.

Robert Abert, 70, of Irondequoit, was at 1335 Portland Ave. at the time. She was visiting her 94-year-old mother, Florence Abert, at the Pearl Nursing Center at . fatal shots Around 7:30 Sunday morning. Rochester firefighters who were at the complex for an unrelated medical incident heard the shots and notified the 911 center.

Capt. Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department said Robert Abert had just arrived to see his mother and reportedly shot her before turning the gun on himself. According to police, both mother and son were shot in the upper bodies. Both Alberts were pronounced dead at the scene, Bello said.

Florence Abert had been at Pearl Nursing Center for about two weeks, since Oct. 31, Bello said.

WeCare Centers, the Long Island-based company that operates Pearl Nursing Home, released a statement regarding the incident:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the resident directly impacted by yesterday’s incident. We would like to take this moment to express our gratitude to the members of the Rochester Police Department for their quick response to the facility to protect our residents. At this time, the facility is cooperating with the subsequent investigation conducted by RPD.”
