The case of a Chicago woman found dead at the bottom of a stairwell took a chilling turn as her family battled their son-in-law over their daughter’s inheritance.

Caitlin Walch Tracey’s lifeless body was found with her leg missing South Loop to his partner Adam Beckerink’s apartment on October 27.

Caitlin’s obituary, written ahead of her funeral this weekend, reads: “Taken from us too soon, she was a force of nature; lively, brave and always ready to make you laugh until your sides hurt. Her sassy attitude, infectious energy and unapologetic zest for life were the most inspiring moments she met with those she met.” It affected everyone.

“Caitlin, or CT as some may know her, had a way of lighting up a room, whether with her quick wit, her unfailing laugh, or her unfiltered honesty.”

46-year-old Beckerink arrested 36-year-old arrested in connection with his wife’s death but released Chicago Police Department after 48 hours at no charge.

The couple had been married for six months and Caitlin’s family was not at the wedding.

While Beckerink argued that, as the surviving spouse, he had the right to collect his wife’s body, her family accused him of launching a ‘campaign of harassment and terror’ against Caitlin in her final months.

Her family said their daughter and Beckerink were together from October 2022 to September 2023 but never lived together.

The Tracey couple says that they got together again after September last year and got married in April this year.

And now Caitlin’s family has filed a petition filed in Cook County Court in October 2023 to support their claim that Beckering abused his wife.

“(Beckerink) physically abused me by throwing a pickle jar at my head, punching me, pushing me, pulling my hair, dragging me by my clothes, and taking my clothes off,” Caitlin wrote. DailyMail.

“(He) also poured vodka on my body, burned my wounds, and acted as if he was going to hit me with an alcohol bottle.”

The incident escalated to the point where Caitlin sought a restraining order after Beckerink allegedly tried to contact her ‘about 20 times a day’ to see her.

“I think if Beckerink knew I was trying to get an Emergency Protective Order here, he would have tried to stop me or I would have risked further harassment,” Caitlin said in requesting a restraining order.

Beckerink was not charged in Caitlin’s death.
