Arrest after two restaurant employees attacked with glass

A woman has been arrested after two staff were attacked with glasses at a restaurant in Sussex on Friday evening.

Witnesses reported seeing a distressed woman enter the Smith and Western on East Street in Horsham at around 7.45pm on Friday, November 15.

It was observed that a male employee was injured in his arm and face, and a female employee was injured in her face. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

A woman who was eating at a restaurant with her family was detained at the scene by an off-duty police officer.

The 36-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of two counts of causing grievous bodily harm.

Detective Superintendent Andy Wolstenholme said: “This was an extremely distressing incident witnessed by a number of people, including families with young children, and I would like to reassure the community that a suspect is in custody while we actively investigate all the circumstances.

“I would also like to commend the actions of the off-duty officer who detained the suspect and helped administer first aid until more crews arrived at the scene. “Officers are never truly off-duty in their community, and in this case the officer was placed in harm’s way without a second thought.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to report it online or call 101 quoting crime reference 47240224149.
