Studio AVC completes new-build home in south-west London

Key design features on the home’s exterior are inspired by the context of decorative Victorian brick architecture, including dogtooth brickwork on the front elevation, angled brick soffits and setback glazing line. Materials include hand-made molded bricks and extensive use of timber, and their use is similarly echoed in surrounding houses.

The interior of the house was designed to maximize natural light and create a feeling of openness, optimizing views towards the backyard. Floor-to-ceiling windows and high ceilings create bright, airy living spaces. Recessed glazed panels on the rear facade draw natural light deeper into the house and offer expansive views towards the garden.

The main living area is an open-plan kitchen and dining area, where large sliding doors open onto a terraced garden. French doors in the upstairs bedrooms with Juliet balconies were designed to frame the view beyond.

To minimize the impact of a deep floor plan, large skylights and open-toothed staircases create a void of light down the center of the house.

The fabric of the house is highly insulated and a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery (MVHR) is installed. It features solar-powered windows and skylights, shading to reduce the risk of overheating, and there is a biodiverse green roof.

Architect’s opinion

The Frame House embodies an innovative architectural approach that celebrates light, views and openness while balancing privacy in a contemporary urban setting. At its core, the design features an angled façade that frames and directs the interior’s connection to the outside world, enhancing natural light and creating dynamic sight lines.

The strategic angle of the building’s exterior acts as a ‘frame’ to the landscape, capturing specific views and transforming the orientation of the house. Large, thoughtfully placed glass panels invite daylight into the interior spaces, creating a sense of continuity between indoor and outdoor environments. This brings a strong visual and spatial clarity, while contemporary brickwork grounds the structure with an inviting warmth appropriate to the local context.

The framing concept also extends to the interior, where careful consideration of materials and layouts emphasizes spatial flow and provides a unique perspective and connection of light to each room. This approach creates a living experience that constantly changes with the seasons and the movement of sunlight, making The Frame House a distinctive and harmonious addition to its surroundings.
