Fort Lauderdale among the 10 spookiest cities in the USA during the Halloween season

Some towns are spookier than others, and Fort Lauderdale can apparently create quite the scare. It turns out the South Florida metro area is among the best U.S. cities to celebrate Halloween.

FinansBuzzA wealth management website compared 75 U.S. cities and measured criteria such as availability of candy, Halloween-related events, haunted attractions (both “real” and created for fun), and online search volume for Halloween-related items, among other factors.

Fort Lauderdale ranked ninth, making it the only Florida city to rank among the top 10 Halloween towns. Orlando came in 17th place.

FinanceBuzz research compiled a Halloween score for each city. Toledo, Ohio, topped the list with a dreadful score of 73.4. Toledo is located at the crossroads between Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Columbus, Ohio, making access to regional Halloween events quite easy.

“Toledo is in the top five in total number of visitors” pumpkin patches and ranks in the top 10 for Halloween parties and events per capita and haunted houses per 100,000 people. The study also found that Toledo has the third-highest average search volume of all cities on Google Trends when it comes to Halloween-related searches.

Fort Lauderdale’s Halloween score was 64 in the FinanceBuzz rankings. A steamy South Florida city may not immediately come to mind when thinking of Halloween, which traditionally evokes plummeting temperatures in the fall. But the study found that Fort Lauderdale is pretty scary.

“Despite having one of the lowest average search volumes for Halloween-related terms in the country (47.2/100, third-lowest in the nation) and an extremely warm fall climate, Fort Lauderdale still managed to rank among the top 10 Halloween towns. “Thanks in large part to the fact that we have 46.7 candy stores and 21.7 costume stores per 100,000 people, both of which are the highest rates of any city in the country,” the analysis concluded.

Ohio had the most appearances in the top 10, with three cities including Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo. California had two cities in the top 10: Riverside and Oakland.
