In January the council began imposing a three-tonne weight limit on goods vehicles on the Albert Bridge in a bid to protect the structure.

Since then, the municipality has been issuing penalty warnings to vehicles exceeding the weight limit.

A Freedom of Information request revealed Kensington and Chelsea Council has fined drivers more than £630,000 for breaching the rule.

The council found it issued 11,766 fines of up to £130 each to drivers between January 9 and May 27.

Two-thirds of drivers had their fines reduced to £65 because they paid within a 14-day period.
