Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Saturday defended the resolve of the judiciary and asserted that judges remain committed to their work even during holidays.

Responding to criticism of judicial “holidays”, the Chief Justice explained that, unlike other fields, the judge’s workload intensifies in both volume and complexity as he progresses through the judiciary.

Highlighting the effort to return home, Chandrachud said, “Judges do not chatter or joke during vacation. They are deeply committed to their work even on weekends, often attending meetings, visiting High Courts or busy with legal aid work.” Saturday to manage the workload.

Speaking about the college system during an interaction after his lecture in Marathi newspaper Loksatta in Mumbai, Chandrachud emphasized that the system requires a consultative dialogue between different levels of government and the judiciary.

He acknowledged the potential for institutional improvement but cautioned against viewing challenges as fundamental flaws.

To a question about the system of collegial appointment of Supreme Court and High Court judges, the CJI said that it is a federal system where responsibility is vested at different levels of governments (both Center and states) and the judiciary.

Chief Justice Chandrachud also responded to the controversy sparked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to his residence on Ganpati Puja.

Addressing the criticism, he clarified that when heads of government (at state or central level) meet the Supreme Court or the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, they adhere to the principles of political maturity and avoid discussing pending cases, according to Live Law. .
