Owners of a Tempe golf course slated to be redeveloped for housing described the course’s impending closure as “bittersweet” as they prepare to leave the neighborhood and move into senior housing.

Shalimar Golf Club, a nine-hole course near Southern Avenue and Country Club Way Under contract to be sold to Scottsdale-based BB Livingrental home developer.

Branden Lombardi, president of BB Living, said in October that Dick and Jane Neuheisel had owned the course for decades and wanted to sell it to another golf operator but were never able to find a suitable buyer.

“Over the last decade, the Neuheisels have had many conversations with the city, various neighbors, and even the ASU Foundation to find a nonprofit to purchase the golf course,” Manjula Vaz, a zoning attorney representing BB Living, wrote in a petition. to the city. “However, they were unsuccessful in finding a buyer willing to own and operate the 9-hole executive golf course.”

In a letter published on a website about Shalimar’s future, the Neuheisels said the decision to sell the site was “made with great care and attention.”

“After careful consideration, we have decided that it is time to close the chapter regarding Shalimar Golf Course,” the Neuheisels wrote in their letter. “The golf business for nine-hole courses is no longer sustainable. Looking to the future, we believe this is the right decision. “While this change is bittersweet, we want to express our deepest gratitude for all the happiness Shalimar has brought us over the years.”

The Neuheisels said they will remain in Tempe but will move from the neighborhood where they have lived for 55 years to a place where seniors live.

“We believe that the future holds new opportunities for all of us and that the Shalimar community will continue to thrive,” they wrote.

The course and clubhouse will remain open throughout March and April before closing.

“We hope you will come and celebrate the spirit of Shalimar during these closing months,” they wrote.

BB Living submitted plans for the project to Tempe in late October. It will partner with Cachet Homes on the development, which will include homes for sale and rentals. According to documents filed with Tempe, the project will include 68 single-family homes for sale, 43 single-family rental homes and 166 townhouse-style rental residences.

Neighbors in the area were strongly opposed to the idea of redeveloping the golf course and said they would like to see the city partner with a golf course operator to keep the golf course open.

“What we don’t want to see is higher-density development that would destroy our uniqueness and any special trace of the neighborhood,” Carl Streiff, president of the Shalimar Association, said of the project in October.

The proposal has not yet been discussed by the Tempe City Council, which must vote to approve the rezoning to allow development of the project.
