Briton Mark Bedwell sentenced to 30 years in prison for sexual offenses against children in the US | England | News

54-year-old British Mark Bedwell sprayed drainage fluid into the face of the police who came to arrest him.

He was being extradited to the United States in connection with sexual assault.

Bedwell had flown 4,400 miles across the Atlantic to carry out the abuse of teenagers in Huntsville, Alabama, after meeting two other pedophiles online.

The IT consultant was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his sickening crimes by Judge Madeline H Haikala in the US District Court in North Alabama last month.

Now Bedwell has filed to appeal his conviction, despite taking a plea deal last December in which he waived his right to appeal the verdict.

He previously admitted traveling with the intent to have sexual intercourse with a minor in exchange for prosecutors dropping three other assault charges.

These included an alleged assault on the child during a trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Bedwell previously made national headlines after being sentenced to six years in prison for firing a highly corrosive liquid from a children’s “super soaker” gun at two police officers at his home in Lowestoft, Suffolk, in December 2019.

The officers suffered serious burns on their faces and hands.

A Police Federation spokesman condemned the crime, describing it as “a despicable attack on two police officers who were carrying out their duties and serving and protecting their communities”.

It can now be revealed that the attacks took place after police attempted to arrest Bedwell and escort him away. Heathrow AirportHe was due to board a flight to the United States to stand trial on child sex charges.

His extradition was postponed until December 2022 after he was released early following a six-year prison sentence for acid attacks.

During legal proceedings in Alabama, the court heard Bedwell first flew to America in May 2013 after he met two American sex offenders online and began receiving pornographic images of children, including photos of his victim.

The boy was subjected to horrific abuse by couple Charles Dunnavant and Carl Herold over a period of eight months.

The FBI was alerted after investigators came across disgusting photos featuring the teenager online.

Bedwell was the target of an international manhunt for more than three years before he was arrested by Scotland Yard detectives in April 2017.

When officers visited his home, they found a Disney World pass in his name, as well as a rug decorated with Minion characters from the children’s animated movie Despicable Me.

Bedwell faced a full extradition hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later that year; Here he admitted that he went to the USA to meet Dunnavant and Harold, but denied harassing the young man.

Fellow pedophiles Dunnavant and Herold were also prosecuted in the US for their horrific catalog of sexual crimes against children.

In November 2015, Dunnavant, 37, was sentenced to a total of 36 years in prison after pleading guilty to a charge of abusing the same teenager as Bedwell.

Herold, an online computer science teacher who went live on YouTube to teach teenagers, faced 18 charges, including aggravated child abuse.

However, the 33-year-old man was found hanged in his cell before he could appear in court in November 2014.
