New Bishop of Sodor and Man to ascend to throne in Peel

Patricia Hillas was beatified at York Minster last month by Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York.

The 88th Bishop of Sodor and Man will be inaugurated at the enthronement ceremony at Man Cathedral.

The Reverend Patricia Hillas takes over from the Reverend Peter Eagles, who has been in office since 2017. until retirement in October last year.

Ascension to the throne in Peel follows Consecration at York Minster By Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York, last month.

The ceremonies will begin with a short ceremony at St German’s Cathedral, Peel Castle, before the enthronement at Man Cathedral from 14:00 BST.

The ceremony includes parades attended by Tynwald representatives, Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer, and diocesan and cathedral officials.

In keeping with tradition, it will begin with the Bishop tapping his staff on the closed cathedral doors before being invited by the Dean, the Rev. Nigel Godfrey.

As part of the service, it will be taken to the thrown place in the cathedral and placed on it.

After being welcomed, he will proceed to seat her on a throne in the cathedral.

Events in Peel will also feature music by the Cathedral choir, Caarhyn Cooidjagh and the Anglican Youth Fellowship Band from Uganda.

Sodor and Man is the smallest diocese in the Church of England, overseeing 45 churches and 27 parishes.

Born in Kuala Lumpur in 1966 to an Indian mother and an English father, Bishop Hillas moved to England with his family in 1971.

He was ordained in 2002 after a career in youth and social work, specializing in supporting HIV and AIDS patients.

He was previously Archdeacon and Canon of Westminster, as well as Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons.

Bishop of the island is a unique position because the office holder holds a seat on the Legislative Council and has the right to vote in Tynwald.

A bill that would eliminate this right is currently being considered evaluated by a committee of three MLCs as it continues its passage through the upper house of the Manx parliament.
