Detroit mother charged in fatal I-75 crash that ejected 4-year-old son

She was involved in a crash that killed her four-year-old child, and now a Detroit mother is facing involuntary manslaughter charges.

Shaniqua Baskin was driving her son, Ja’Quavation King-Baskin, unrestrained in the backseat when her brakes stopped. He crossed the median on I-75 near I-94 in Detroit and hit another car. Ja’Quavation was thrown and later found lying on the highway when Michigan State Police arrived.

At the scene, Baskin failed a field sobriety test. Blood alcohol test results can determine possible charges. After the accident, Baskin’s 6-year-old daughter was taken away by the Child Protection Agency.

“I’m shaken, my child is on the ground; of course, I can’t walk in a straight line. I can barely breathe,” Baskin said. “Anyone who knows Shaniqua knows that Shaniqua never drinks.”

There is no word yet on the amount of alcohol in his blood after the accident. Meanwhile, investigators say Baskin knowingly drove with bad brakes and without her child being properly restrained. He was charged Friday with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse. He was given a large bond of $20,000 in cash.

“I think that’s too much for first-degree child abuse. I think that’s too much,” said defense attorney Todd Perkins. “I can’t find your words. I mean, when can a lawyer not trust his words?”

Perkins is not involved in this case, but hears nearly all of his cases in the 36th district court, where Baskin was charged. He says he was overcharged.

“According to the press release I’m looking at right now, this is not a criminal act,” he said. “For the outcome to be reasonably foreseeable, there must be conduct that was reasonably foreseeable.”

There is a bond resetting hearing next week where Perkins will receive a personal bond and be released as the case progresses.

“This is a horrific set of circumstances that this young lady will experience for the rest of her life,” he said.

Although he failed a field sobriety test following the crash, there are no additional charges against Baskins for impaired driving as of Nov. 15.
