Unsteady driver crashes on Route 128 in Gloucester, injuring three

Three drivers were injured in a crash near the Annisquam River Bridge in Gloucester when State Police stopped pursuing a speeding Toyota Camry for the second time Friday afternoon.

The crash closed all lanes of Route 128 for most of the afternoon, officials said.

The driver of the Camry, who allegedly reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, and the drivers of two other vehicles were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, State Police spokesman Timothy McGuirk said in a statement.

State Police are not releasing the identity of the Camry driver “at this time,” according to the statement.

McGuirk said a trooper first noticed the Camry when it failed to stop at the intersection of Interstates 93 and 95 in Woburn around 2 p.m.

McGuirk said the Camry sped through heavy traffic, changed lanes and went into the breakdown lane. That’s when a commander ended the soldier’s pursuit, he said.

A short time later, State Police said different troopers in Beverly spotted the same Camry driving erratically north on Route 128.

An unmarked cruiser pursued the Camry until a marked cruiser caught up near the Grapevine Road exit. McGuirk said the Camry “made contact with the unmarked cruiser and continued its journey.” “The marked cruiser initiated a second pursuit.”

The Camry sped toward Gloucester at 100 miles per hour. Police lost sight of the vehicle until it approached the Route 133 exit, McGuirk said. He said the pursuit was aborted when it approached nearby routes.

β€œAt the same time as the termination warrant, police reported that a Toyota Camry had crashed in front of the Annisquam River Bridge,” McGuirk said.

Two more vehicles were involved in the accident. State Police said the three drivers were treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The investigation into the accident continues.
