Police shoot man driving stolen car, video shows

body worn camera images The report, released Friday evening, cited an incident in Newark in which a police officer shot a man who tried to flee in a stolen car during a traffic stop.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 12, two Newark Police officers spotted a car parked on Clinton Place near Hawthorne Boulevard in the city, determined the car was stolen, and pulled their patrol car in front of the vehicle so they could speak with the person. According to the statement made by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, which is investigating the incident, he is inside.

The officers got out of the car, walked toward the stolen vehicle, saw a man in the passenger seat and ordered him to get out, which he did, the office said. One of the officers, Alexander Ferreira, then handcuffed the man and escorted him to the area where the parked police vehicle was located.

A few minutes later, another man emerged from a nearby convenience store, got into the stolen car through the passenger-side door and got into the driver’s seat, investigators said. Ferreira and his partner He left the handcuffed passenger next to the patrol vehicle and immediately returned to the other vehicle and tried to remove the man who had just entered the vehicle.

The man ordered the man to stop, but he did not comply. Authorities said Ferreira returned to the cruiser, placed the handcuffed man in the backseat and ran toward the front driver’s side of the stolen car. Ferreira’s partner then fought with the driver, who put the car in gear and reversed, causing the officer to move backwards from the vehicle.

The car then accelerated and Ferriera fired two shots from his duty weapon, striking the driver, the office said.

The vehicle hit the patrol car and stopped for a moment, then accelerated forward at a high rate of speed and crossed the intersection. The vehicle crashed into a brick building and struck two unoccupied parked vehicles, authorities said.

Ferreira and his partner provided medical aid to the driver, whose name was not determined, and the driver was taken to University Hospital. He was treated for life-threatening injuries but was expected to survive, investigators said.

No charges were announced Friday as the shooting was still under investigation by the office.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda called the release of the footage “a prudent step in the investigative process that is consistent with the Newark Police Department’s commitment to serving our community with the utmost transparency.”

“We are confident that Attorney General (Matthew) Platkin will conduct a thorough and reasonable investigation into this incident,” Miranda said. “We also thank our conscientious community members for their willingness to come forward to cooperate with the investigation.”
