SAN ANTONIO – Inmate Marcus Joseph Fontenette, 46, passed away at the Bexar County Jail.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Fontenette was found unresponsive in his cell during a routine check. Jail staff immediately performed life-saving measures but he was later pronounced dead by first responders.

The exact cause of death is currently under investigation by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. However, initial findings point to a possible medical event.

Pursuant to the Sandra Bland Act, the Bexar County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office is conducting a criminal investigation into the incident. Additionally, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative investigation. Jail officials also notified the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
