Just before 8 a.m. Monday, East Precinct officers were dispatched to a person who had been shot in the 200 block of Gadsden Highway in front of the CVS.

They arrived to find Cortes slumped over the wheel of his truck in the 9300 block of Parkway East.

Witnesses said Cortes was shot once in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8.15 in the morning.

People around rushed to the aid of the injured.

A woman who did not want to give her name said the man managed to stop the truck and park it without becoming unresponsive.

He said that when he first came to the man, he had a pulse but was unconscious. He started CPR but it didn’t work.

Other bystanders took the child to CVS.

An employee at CVS said the child was anxious and upset. Witnesses said she began crying as officers escorted her from the scene to the East Precinct to locate other family members.

He was reunited with his family soon after.

Authorities said Cortes was driving on the Parkway when another vehicle pulled up next to him and someone opened fire on the truck.
