Former NFL linebacker Leander Antwione Williams was arrested on Thursday and was indicted for allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

31-year-old Williams facing charges Felony crimes such as assaulting, resisting, or obstructing certain officers, obstructing law enforcement during civil disorder, and misdemeanor crimes of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, including resorting to physical violence, in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building and an act of physical violence in a Capitol building or buildings.

Court documents allege Williams was part of the first group of pro-Donald Trump rioters to breach the Capitol perimeter. At one point, Williams walked through the crowd and “confronted and overpowered Capitol Police officers.”

It was also alleged that he “lunged at a police officer and hit the officer’s hand” because the officer used spray to prevent the rioters from advancing.

MPD body camera footage showed Williams advancing toward a bike rack barricade and then allegedly grabbing a barricade and trying to pull it away from the police line. MPD officers attempted to push him, but Williams fought back and allegedly struck an officer in the head with a “strong arm movement.”

Williams was eventually carried down the steps by officers. Williams then rejoined the rioters and allegedly pushed them towards the bike rack line again. About 20 minutes later, after the bike racks were removed, Williams allegedly grabbed and pushed MPD and Capitol Police officers to cross the line.

Williams, according to description A person from the US attorney general’s office for the District of Columbia left the Congress building in the evening.

Williams was a fifth-round draft pick by the Detroit Lions in 2016 out of Georgia Southern. He played one season with the Lions and then played on the practice squads of the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
