Dancer Eileen Kramer, ‘longest-living woman in NSW’, dies aged 110

Eileen Stellar Kramer, considered a “pioneer” and national treasure, died Friday at the age of 110.

The artist, dancer, choreographer and writer celebrated her birthday last week and was the oldest woman in New South Wales, according to her loved ones.

Born in Sydney on November 8, 1914, Ms Kramer spent most of her life performing in Australia and around the world.

In her late 20s, Ms. Kramer became involved with the Bodenwieser Ballet, considered the country’s first modern dance company.

“I was about 24 years old when I was recently taken to see a performance of the Bodenwieser Ballet from Central Europe and I fell in love with it immediately,” he said. in 2023.

He became a member of the company within three years.

During his career, he also worked and lived in India, Paris, London and New York.

Mrs Kramer returned to Sydney at the age of 99 after 20 years away from dancing to care for her ailing husband.

Shortly after returning to NSW, she was appointed ambassador for the Institute of Art Health, and the national advocacy body provided her with financial support to continue her work.

The same group considered Ms. Kramer a national treasure.

In 2017, when she was 103, Ms. Kramer portrayed and choreographed the 17-year-old princess in A Buddha’s Wife.

In a statement, Ms. Kramer’s legal guardians described her as a “pioneer” and “true creative soul” and said she died “peacefully.”

“He will be greatly missed by those who knew him and those inspired by him around the world,” they said.

“The last dancer of the Bodenwieser era was the longest-living woman in NSW and quite possibly the longest-living dancer internationally.”
