Claudio Ranieri, 73, returned to action just five months after announcing his retirement from club management.

The former Premier League champion has been appointed as the new head coach of his boyhood club AS Roma, returning to manage the Serie A side for a third time.

He becomes their third manager this season, following the sacking of Danielle De Rossi and Ivan Juric.

Ranieri will remain in charge until the end of the season, and the club later announced that he will “move into a senior management position where he will become ownership advisor on all sporting matters.”

He took charge of 18 teams at the club and had a brief stint as Greece coach in a managerial career that spanned almost four decades until 1986.
