Deputies tried to stop vehicle before fatal crash | News, Sports, Jobs


FAIRPOINT — Law enforcement attempted to stop the vehicle involved in a fatal crash in Fairpoint early Wednesday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck that left one person dead and another seriously injured. Patrol St. According to a news release provided by Lt. He said officers could see it, but law enforcement stopped following the vehicle closely in the New Athens area because it was going too fast for safety. Myers added that the driver, Smith, was wanted on a warrant in Belmont County, while the passenger, Bray, was wanted on a warrant in Cuyahoga County.

Belmont County Prosecutor Kevin Flanagan confirmed there are warrants for Smith’s arrest in Belmont and Cuyahoga counties. Wanted in Belmont County “parole review.”

An article published in The Times Leader on December 19, 2019, states that Smith was arrested on September 26 of the same year for complicity in possession of cocaine and tampering with evidence. The charges stemmed from a traffic stop on Interstate 70 in Belmont County. Smith was later convicted in that case, according to Flanagan.

Flanagan also noted that Bray was wanted on a warrant out of Cuyahoga County.

In addition to patrol, emergency responders Wednesday included the Cumberland Trail Fire District, Belmont and Harrison county sheriff’s departments and St. There was also the St. Clairsville Police Department.
